The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed that a Kenyan-registered aircraft, 5Y-AXO, crashed in Bardere as it prepared to land at the Airport on Monday. The aircraft belongs to African Express.
KCAA director Captain Gilbert Kibe said they are yet to confirm the circumstances under which the plane crashed.
There were 6 persons on board at the time of the accident, two Kenyans and four Somalis.
The aircraft has been operating in Somalia since 2nd March.
Captain Kibe said the aircraft departed Mogadishu for Baidoa where it landed at 1.10 PM. It then departed Baidoa for Berdale where it landed at 4 PM. It later departed for Bardere and the operations officer lost contact with the aircraft at about 4.20 PM.
Somalia president Mohamed Abdullahi ‘Farmaajo’ has expressed his regret and ‘conveyed his condolences’.
A statement from Kenya’s foreign affairs ministry says that President Mohamed Abdullahi and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta spoke on phone.
The Somalia Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation issued a statement saying the government was conducting investigations and will publish findings in due course.
President Mohamed has invited the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority to be part of the team investigating the incident.
