Joash Onyango wins Most Valuable Player award
Gor Mahia defender Joash Onyango has won the Most Valuable Player award at a ceremony held at National Museums of Kenya yesterday. The ceremony was graced by Sports cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed and sports PS Peter Karimi Kaberia.
Joash Onyango becomes the first defender to win the award since it was established. He bagged Ksh 1 Million, LG55-inch smart TV and a trophy with his name. Other Gor Mahia players who previously won the award include George Blackberry Odhiambo and Meddie Kagere. The two players are no longer at Gor Mahia.
Joash Onyango helped his club to win the 18th Kenyan Premier League title and reach the quarter finals of CAF Confederations Cup.
His good performances and reliability led to him earning a call up to the Harambee Stars squad. He helped the National Team to reach the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt after a 15 year absence.
Joash Onyango defeated former team mate Francis Kahata who joined Simba FC of Tanzania and Enosh Ochieng’ of Ulinzi stars. He also won the best defender award ahead of Kelvin Wesonga of Sony Sugar and Brian Otieno of Bandari FC.
