After 13 years of controlling Britney Spears’ resources, Jamie Spears has agreed to step down as the conservator of his daughter’s estate.
Jamie Spears filed a document in Los Angeles Superior Court agreeing to step down and he plans to work with the court on an orderly transition.
The court document filed on Thursday, August 12, Jamie Spears’ lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, stated that “There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate … and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests.”
“So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.”
However, the court filing does not have a timeline for Jamie Spears’ departure.
“Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the court,” Thoreen wrote.

This new move comes just weeks after Britney Spears filed a petition demanding for the removal of his father from his position as a conservator due to abuse. Britney Spears, 39, has on several occasions accused his father in court hearings of using her Estate and income for his own financial benefit, and of using this position to “control” her.
This story of conservatorship started in 2008 when Jamie requested that Britney Spears, who was experiencing mental health issues, to be placed in a conservatorship. For nearly 13 years he has been overseeing Britney Spears’ estate.
Britney Spears’ lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, stated that Jamie Spears appears to have “profited handsomely” from being his daughter’s conservator. The lawyer also added that “serious questions abound concerning Mr. Spears’ potential misconduct, including offenses of interest, conservatorship abuse and the evident dissipation of Ms. Spears’s fortune.”
Rosengart, has stated that Jamie Spears took a percentage of Britney’s earnings even though he does not serve as her manager or agent. Jamie took a 1.5 percent from the gross revenues as well as income from merchandise. In total Jamie is accused of benefiting illegal from a total of $2.1 million. In 2011, Jamie too a 2.95 percent commission on Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale tour which in total was $500,000.
Further, Jamie Spears has been accused of paying himself $16,000 per month as salary which is $2,000 more that what he is supposed to be paid for the services rendered to her daughter. He further takes away another $2,000 for office expenses.
“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” Said Mathew Rosengart in a statement.
“We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future,” added Rosengart.
