Italy surrogacy law is the main focus of this article. Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and her government have made it illegal for Italians to seek surrogate mothers outside the country. This will make it difficult for LGBTQ couples to become legal parents.
Now those couples cannot go abroad and become parents through surrogacy. Critics have observed that this new law is targeting same-sex partners. The bill was voted into law by the Senate of Italy.
Surrogacy ban has been in place in Italy since 2004. If Italians commit this crime of going to Canada or USA to seek for surrogacy arrangements, the punishment will be two years in jail and fines of up to euros 1 million for violation of Italy surrogacy law.
Prime Minister Meloni stated that surrogacy is an ‘inhuman’ practice which treated children as supermarket products.
Italy is suffering from falling birthrates despite of which a new Italy surrogacy law has been introduced.
