Today we were discussing with my friends Ben, Charity and “president” on the possibility of living off-the-grid in Kenya.
This means not using electric power from the national utility company, not using cooking gas, not using water from the local water company.
This sounds like a fantastic affair which I bet it is.
How?
You can live off the grid especially if you reside in a rural area.
First you need solar panels and related accessories to provide you with electricity.
Secondly, you need a biogas generator to supply you with cooking gas. Here you use cow dung and a biogas digester to get the gas you need and hence you will not need the expensive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Kenya is a star in production of renewable energy
Kenya is currently producing 2,850 Mega Watts of renewal energy against a demand of 1,900 Mega Watts. This is so encouraging. It simply means that Kenya produces more energy than it can consume.
However, as you may be aware we do not have technologies to store the extra energy produced. My professor mentioned that power can be stored in batteries or in molten salt. This requires some extra research to establish how it works.
Just wondering why then do we import power from Uganda? This is done on need basis.
