Baghdad, Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday after an explosive-laden drone targeted his residence in Baghdad according to military reports.
Al-Kadhimi posted on Twitter after the assassination attempt and called for “calm and restraint from everyone.”
He added: “Thank God, I am fine and among my people.”
He said that the drone attack was a coward move by people who are against a better future for Iraq. The Prime Minister called for calm and constructive dialogue following the event for the “sake and future of Iraq.”
“I was and still am a redemption project for Iraq and the people of Iraq. The missiles of treachery will not discourage the believers and will shake a hair of the stability and determination of our heroic security forces to preserve people’s security, achieve justice and set the law in place,” he said.
According to reports from the Ministry of Interior the assassins used three drones in the attempt on the life of the Prime Minister. Two of the drone were downed by the security forces. The Ministry of Interior stated that the Prime Minister was not harmed and he is in good health and they are “taking the necessary measures in connection with this failed attempt.”
The Prime Minister’s residence is located in the heavily fortified place of Baghdad known as the Green Zone. The area also hosts other diplomatic and government buildings. The drone attack wounded a few of his guards and minor damage.
The US State Department condemned the “apparent act of terrorism” in a statement released on Sunday.
“We are in close touch with the Iraqi security forces charged with upholding Iraq’s sovereignty and independence and have offered our assistance as they investigate this attack,” spokesperson Ned Price said.
