Let us now explore the importance of water pans in agriculture. In 2020, I was a new resident at Kongasis village in Nakuru County. We embarked in building a home.
The first facility we set up was a pit latrine because we consider health to be very crucial in any home.
We purchased construction stones and aggregates from the nearby quarry.
In Nakuru County the construction stones are readily available from quarries such as the one shown above. These stones are rare in other parts of Kenya and people in those area resort to use of bricks as a cheaper alternative.
After constructing the pit latrine and the house, we embarked on having in place a water dam. It was a lot of work but my cousins Obed, Abiud and myself put forward our best feet and delivered on the new project.
Currently, the water pan is one of the longer lasting water storage in the entire village. Hundreds of goats, cows and sheep quench their thirst from our water point on a regular basis. We shall continue maintaining the water pan to continue benefiting people for as long as possible.
We stopped digging once we reached a hard layer of sand that retains water. Now we are required to remove the debris from the water pan before every heavy rains.
In order to achieve our goal, we had to move a mountain of sand from the water pan.
