We now take a look at the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on patients with high risk conditions in Ethiopia. According to Addis Fortune, in the past there were unsanitary conditions at the waiting bays of some Ethiopian hospitals such as the Black Lion Hospital- the largest specialized referral hospital in Ethiopia.
This situation has changed with the outbreak of Covid-19. Now, even the people fear visiting hospitals and healthcare providers are devising ways of reducing the number of people who must seek healthcare services at their facilities.
Before Covid-19 emerged, Black Lion Hospital is reported to have been serving over 20,000 patients per day. However, by April 2020 there were only 1/5 of that population. People were avoiding contracting the deadly Covid-19 virus by staying at home.
The pandemic also forced the health providers to embrace the concept of Telehealth where patients seek the doctor’s advise via phone.
As a result of limited access to healthcare services, those patients with high-risk ailments have been impacted badly with a number of them dying before their next appointment.
