Currently, cyber-security is a hot topic around the world. This new trend is associated with the introduction of new digital technologies to business, politics, banking among other sectors. The online fraudsters are becoming smarter every day. It is even possible that you may be the one getting the hackers access to your company. This is unfortunate. In this article, we are going to show you how to make sure that your company is safe from hacking.
Outsmart the hackers
It is important to clearly understand how the hackers think. Knowledge is power. This will protect you from hackers’ attempts.
In spear phishing, you receive an email appearing to be originating from a trusted source. It appears as if it is from your boss, colleague or customer. In truth, it is coming from a hacker.
A group of hackers from Russia nicknamed “Cozy Bear” use spear phishing to infiltrate computer systems globally. They send emails which when opened install programs on your personal computer (PC). These programs are made up of smart software that makes your PC quite vulnerable to cyber security attacks.
A second group has also been reported in the same part of the world. It goes by the name “Fancy Bear.” This group is more sophisticated in its methodologies. Their techniques are hard to detect. They register domain names which look similar to targeted genuine companies. They then copy the structure of that company’s email service provider and use that to hack.
The hackers are good at capitalizing on their victim’s emotions in decision-making. They carry out attacks based on that human weakness. This is called social engineering, it is a process of extracting information through emotional manipulation. The process involves the hackers researching the background on you. The information is found on your social media profiles and other online transactions. These fraudsters will collect as much information about you as possible.
When you receive an email from a trusted person or organization demanding for a quick response there is a likelihood that you will respond without having a second thought. This is the emotional weakness that hackers capitalize on.
Be on the lookout
Do not reveal too much information on social media platforms. Maintain as much privacy as you can manage. The information you provide when signing up on webpages can be used to clearly indicate who you are, your profession and your place of residence.
Maintain Secure Passwords
Never use the same passwords for several sites. Make them super hard to guess. There are several online programs that you can use to generate free but strong passwords. For instance, we have LastPass and Secure Password Generator among others. Make sure you generate and then store the passwords in a save place.
You can also employ the 2-step authentication process. This is not pleasant but then it ensures your security.
Take your time to reflect before you respond to emails
If you receive an email from a cousin or a brother asking you to send them money via an email take extra care. Be vigilant especially with your emails. If the email you receive is drafted in a different tone, make it a habit of calling or sending text messages before you take action.
Companies should train their employees
A research by IBM revealed that over 95 percent of security breaches are caused by human errors. Firms should offer training for their staff to be on the lookout for signs of hacking. Absence of security awareness leads to human errors.
