German regulators have issued strong recommendations that people who receive the first dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca should receive mRNA vaccine as their second dose.
This decision was made on efficacy grounds. German is saying that people who receive AstraZeneca as their first dose should also receive Moderna or Pfizer BioNTech as the second dose.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has set an example in getting shots of mixed vaccines. In June she received her Moderna dose following her AstraZeneca dose earlier on.
Studies have shown that the immune response following a mix dose is clearly superior.
Elsewhere Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Vaccination also made an earlier albeit weak recommendation on mixing vaccines, “”an mRNA vaccine is now preferred as the second dose for individuals who have received a first dose of AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD vaccine.”
