AS Monaco winger Gelson Martins has received a six-month ban for pushing a referee during a Ligue 1 clash at Nimes.
The Portugal winger was suspended as a precaution by Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) on 6th February.
Martins pushed the referee twice Mikael Lesage during Monaco’s 3-1 loss, initially making contact with the official after teammate Tiemoue Bakayoko was red-carded in the 32nd minute. He shoved the referee for the second time when he was sent-off.
Martins joined AS Monaco from Laliga Club Atletico Madrid in 2019.
The 24-year-old already sat out five games and is set to miss the remaining Ligue 1 games of the season.
AS Monaco issued a statement: ‘’AS Monaco takes note of the decision of the disciplinary committee of the LFP to sanction Gelson Martins with a firm suspension of six months dating to February 6th, a heavy sanction,
‘’The club once again condemns the unjustifiable behavior of its attacker, but also regrets the excessive length of this suspension for a player who has never known a disciplinary ban in more than 200 games at the highest level.’’
