Fumio Kishida has been shown in as the new Prime Minister for Japan on 4 October, 2021.
Fumio Kishida, 64, was elected as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) last week. He was officially confirmed as Japan’s 100th Prime Minister following a parliamentary vote.
Kishida is a moderate liberal and is inheriting a Japan that has experienced a surge in Covid-19 infections, a rapidly aging population, a stagnating economy and increasing tensions with China.
Previously, Kishida served as Japan’s foreign affairs Minister from 2012 to 2017 under Abe regime.
Kishida is taking over from Yoshihide Suga who stepped aside from contesting his party’s leadership position.
Kishida’s new Cabinet is made up of 20 members with 13 having no previous Cabinet experience, while three are women and the average age is 61.
Kishida has promised to narrow the income gap and boost consumer spending. He stated that “Abenomics” policies did not succeed in trickling down from the rich to the poor and he is determined to change that for the better.
Kishida will also play a key role in managing the coronavirus pandemic response in Japan.
So far so good, Japan has vaccinated 60% of her population against Covid-19. Last week Japan lifted the state of emergency as the number of infections dropped.
