The former King of Belgium has been admitted in hospital with signs of dehydration according to a palace spokesman.
Albert II was sent to hospital as a cautionary measure according to Xavier Vaert.
‘Examinations are being done. He is conscious,’ Vaert said.
The former King of Belgium Albert II is the father of the current King Philippe. He was the youngest son of King Leopold III. He ascended to the throne on August 9, 1993 at the age of 59. He was crowned after his brother Baudouin passed away childless.
Albert II stayed on the throne until 21 July 2013 when he abdicated. He then handed over power to Philippe who is now 63 years old. King Philippe was planning to participate in an event at University of Ghent which he was forced to cancel. He had to visit his father at hospital.
The former King of Belgium other children such as Prince Laurent and Prince Emmanuel were seen arriving at Saint-Luc hospital in Brussels to be with their father.
‘I realise that my age and my health are no longer allowing me to carry out my duties as I would like to. Prince Philippe is well prepared to succeed me,’ Ex-King Albert II said at the time of his abdication. He was speaking to the BBC.
