The former Formula 1 boss Max Mosley shot himself after learning that he had cancer. This conclusion was made by a coroner. The boss died at his London home in May 2021.
Max Mosley died at the age of 81.
The Westminster Coroner’s court was told that he had a final meal with his wife, shared his plans and wrote a suicide note. Dr. Fiona Wilcox, senior coroner, concluded that it was a suicide.
Mr. Mosley developed a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma which is a cancer that affects immune cells in 2019. After doctors exhausted all treatment options they told him that he had a ‘very limited life expectancy’ and he had been transferred to palliative care.
After his death a suicide note was found the following day. The cause of death was recorded as a gunshot wound.
She said: “I am also entirely satisfied Mr. Mosley would not have undertaken this action but for the distressing and debilitating terminal lymphoma.”
The inquest heard from Mr. Mosley’s relatives that the late’s biggest success as the president of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – the governing body for Formula 1 racing as well as the non-profit representing motoring interests globally – was “green technology in F1” and “the promotion of road safety”.
Mr. Mosley served as the president of F1 from 1993 to 2009 and he used the position to introduced wide-reaching reforms to promote safety at Formula 1 following the demise of Ayrton Senna back in 1994.
The new Formula 1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone, said that it was “like losing a brother.”
“He did, a lot of good things not just for motorsport, also the [car] industry. He was very good in making sure people-built cars that were safe.” Bernie added.
Mosley was the son of a British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley.
