Fiji airways has laid off more than half of its staff as travel restrictions have cut the airlines revenue to ‘’virtually zero.’’
The 758 people were laid off on Monday amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The remaining 49% of workers will have to take a 20% pay cut starting from June. The airline will also extend flight bans to August.
Fiji Airways depends heavily on Tourism, but due to travel restrictions, tourists cannot travel. Most tourists who travel to Fiji come from neighboring Australia and New Zealand.
Fiji airline boss Andre Viljoen said: ‘’The sad reality of prolonged flight suspensions means that we simply do not have work for a large segment of our workforce now, and for the foreseeable future.’’
18 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Fiji with zero deaths. No new cases have been reported for over a month.
