Teams will now be allowed to make up to 5 substitutions per game, instead of the usual 3, as a temporary measure to help players cope with potential fixture congestion in the aftermath of coronavirus outbreak, FIFA confirmed on Friday.

This change will be allowed in all football competitions that are due to finish this year,

Individual competition organisers will decide whether to implement it or not.

FIFA also announced that competitions using Video Assistant Referee (VAR) would be free to discontinue its on resumption of the competitions.

IFAB, the soccer’s rule making body decided to change the rules ‘’based on a proposal received from FIFA seeking to protect player welfare’’.

Football activities across the globe were brought to a halt due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Most leagues are hoping to complete their seasons. To do so, they’re likely to pile up fixtures into a shorter period than the usual once games resume.

IFAB and FIFA will decide later whether the temporary amendments would need to be extended further.
