Burundi’s newly elected president, Evariste Ndayishimiye, has been sworn in as two months earlier than planned.
Those who attended arrived early so as to allow time for coronavirus precautions such as washing hands and checking of temperature.
The ceremony comes following the death of his predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza.
Nkurunziza died of cardiac arrest last week aged 55 according to the Burundi government.
After 15 years in power, Mr Nkurunziza was due to step down in August.
According to Burundi’s constitution, if the president dies in office, the president of the national assembly should succeed him.
But after a ruling by the Burundi’s constitutional court, Mr Ndayishimiye’s inauguration in the capital, Gitega, was brought forward.
Ndayishimiye, 52, who was handpicked by the ruling CNDD-FDD party to succeed Nkurunziza, will serve a seven-year term, pending his reelection.
