Ethiopia’s lawmakers have agreed to extend the Prime Minister and government’s term beyond October because elections will have to be delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed now faces a year or more in office.
The polls were to be held in August but they won’t go on because of the pandemic.
The parliamentarians voted on Wednesday to extend their mandates and hold the national election 9 to 12 months after health authorities determine it’s safe.
The 9 regional governments have also had their terms extended in a binding ruling by the House of Federation.
The electoral body of Ethiopia said it can’t register voters because of the pandemic.
The House of Federation also postponed the national census exercise which was to be held this year. It is the third time the exercise has been delayed
More than 2,300 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Ethiopia.
