Marathon Champion and World Marathon Record holder Eliud Kipchoge is the World Athletics Male Athlete of the year 2019 as Dalilah Muhammad, who won World Championship 400m hurdles gold in Doha, Qatar bags the female athlete of the year.
Eliud Kipchoge beat other five contestants to retain the award during the World Athletics gala held in Monaco, France on Saturday night.
Eliud Kipchoge beat World pole vault champion Sam Kendricks (USA), World 400M hurdles champion Karsten Warholm (Norway), World Cross Country and World 10,000M champion Joshua Cheptegei (Uganda) and World 200M champion Noah Lyles (USA)
Eliud Kipchoge, 35, won the London Marathon in April in a record time of 2:02:37 before making history as the first human to run a marathon under two hours when he completed the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria in 1:59:40 on October 12th.
World 800M record holder David Rudisha was the first Kenyan to win the award in 2010.
400M hurdler Dalilah Muhammad, 29, (USA) won the female athlete of the year award beating Brigid Kosgei (Kenya), Jamaican Shelly, Ann Fraser and Sifa Hassan of Netherlands.
Muhammad became the first 400m hurdler to win the Female Athlete of the Year award since Britain’s Sally Gunnell in 1993.
Kenya-based based Colm O’Connell from Ireland, who coaches David Rudisha won the Coaching Achievement.
