Yesterday, I met a around 5 herders taking care of over 500 goats, 200 sheep and 100 cows in Kiambogo area of Nakuru County.
From my observation, the livelihood of pastoralists is endangered by both climate change and over population.
The expansive lands that used to provide pasture for the farmers is now under cultivation to produce maize, beans, Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes among other food crops.
This means that the maasai and other pastoralist communities and increasing straining to maintain their nomadic lifestyle.
The other factor affecting their lives is the large tracts of land being used as wildlife consevancies.
Truly, life is changing at a fast rate than we thought possible.
In the 1990s growing up in the Kisii Highlands, I never thought land will be as scarce as it is now.
What can be done?
In order to salvage the situation those land barons keeping their land idle should lease it out to farmers and livestock keepers.
That way, we will see increase food production and improve standards of living for Kenyans. That is my 50 cent though.
