Didier Drogba’s hopes of becoming Ivory Coast’s FA President suffered a blow after he secured zero votes from members of Association of former Ivory Coast footballers.
The Chelsea legend was considered the favorite to win the presidency and many saw his candidacy as a chance of reviving Ivorian football.
The voting exercise was done through video conferencing and 11 out of 14 members of the Association of former Ivorian Footballers who participated opted to vote for Sory Diabate. 3 members did not participate.
Drogba hopes that members of Cote d’Ivoire’s active footballers Association, referees and coaches who haven’t voted will vote in his favour.
Drogba, 42, began his football career at French club Le Mans in 1998 before signing for Guingamp in 2002. He moved to Olympique de Marseille in 2003 and joined Premier League side Chelsea a year later.
Drogba is remembered for scoring the winning penalty in the UEFA Champions League final against German club Bayern Munich in 2012. He had stints in China and Turkey before returning to Chelsea where he won a fourth Premier League title.
He retired from football after a stint with American side Phoenix Rising in 2018.
Drogba made more than 100 appearances for Ivory Coast and won the African player of the year twice.
