Residents of Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo have escaped the eruption of Mt. Nyiragongo and crossed the border to Rwanda.
The volcanic eruption caused a thick red cloud of dust over the town of Goma (a town with a population of 2 million people) in Democratic Republic of Congo.
In 2002, Mt. Nyiragongo erupted and in the process killed 250 people and left 120,000 people homeless.
The fleeing people were seen with their personal belongings such as mattresses among others.
The UN Peace keeping forces in DR Congo said that they are conducting reconnaissance flights over the city.
Mt. Nyiragongo is said to be one of the most active volcanoes in the world but Goma Volcano Observatory had not conducted regular observations because the World Bank had cut funding because of alleged corruption cases reported.
Lava from the volcanic eruption of Mt. Nyiragongo reached the Goma Airport in DR Congo.
The volcano’s deadly eruption happened in 1977 when an excess of 600 people were killed.
