Doctors in Sierra Leone have gone on strike leaving Covid-19 patients at main treatment centres without care.
The doctors downed their tools on Thursday leaving the patients stranded.
The doctors say that they were promised bonuses by the government during the pandemic but they haven’t received it.
The strike marks a rise in the row between the doctors and the Sierra Leone government. The doctors say funds for the coronavirus response are being misused.
They further complain lack of protection and compensation for the healthcare workers.
“No patient showing COVID-like symptoms will be treated by any doctor until we have the support we need,” said S.K. Jusu, the head doctor at Fourah Bay College, a school whose dormitories have been transformed into the country’s largest COVID-19 treatment centre on a hill overlooking the capital Freetown.
Nearly 1,500 coronavirus cases have been reported in Sierra Leone including 60 deaths. 160 cases are health workers.
The former British colony, which is among the world’s poorest countries, was hit hard by the Ebola epidemic in 2014-16 during which almost 4,000 people died, including 250 health workers.
