An anesthetist has been arrested for raping a pregnant woman during a C-section and also alleged to have attacked two other women on the same day.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, was arrested on suspicion of rape after after he was filmed orally raping a woman following a heavy sedation at the Hospital da Mulher in Sao Joao de Meriti, Rio de Janeiro.
The woman’s husband was told to leave the room and he discovered what had just happened to his wife when he recognized the doctor on TV after he was arrested by the police.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said delegate Barbara Lomba, who is in charge of investigating the case.
The victim told her family that she thought she was experiencing a hallucination when the sexual attack happened.
Hospital staff members were always worried about the amount of drugs that Bezerra was administering to his patients.
As a result of administering too much anaesthetic, the mothers were unable to hold their babies after delivery.
Therefore, staff members who were suspicious installed secret cameras in the room to see what the doctor was real doing to the patients.
They were shocked to see him sexually assaulting the woman. He engaged in sexual assault for nearly 10 minutes.
In majority of the C-sections, the woman is not fully sedated during the procedure. However, the women who earlier underwent the C-Section said that they were fully unconscious during the procedure.
One of the patients said: “The only thing I remember from the surgery is his voice. He kept talking softly in my ear, it bothered me. He asked if I was okay.”
Two other people who said that they were Bezerra’s patients also arrived at the police station in Brazil following the above accusations.
“Giovanni, still positioned towards the patient’s neck and head, started, with his left arm bent, slow movements back and forth,” the witness said, according to G1 Rio de Janeiro.
“From the movement and the curvature of the arm, it looked like he was holding the patient’s head towards his pelvic region.”
The doctor was arrested and booked at the prison of Benfica. On Tuesday 12, the doctor’s custody hearing was done.
If found guilty of rape, he will be imprisoned for between 8 – 15 years.
