The late Anglican Archbishop, Desmond Tutu, who died at 90 will be buried today 1 Jan 2022 in Cape Town. He is remembered by many as a Christian who fought for racial reconciliation and truth.
Desmond served as a bishop of Joburg from 1985 to 1986 and subsequently as Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996.
During his tenure, Tutu advocated against South Africa’s Apartheid system which segregated Black and White citizens. Many South Africans who knew Tutu personally describe him as a peacemaker who did not see people from their race or gender but saw each person to have been created in God’s likeness.
Tutu used to say that “God does not have grand-children, he only has children. He does not see gender.”
His students describe him as a brilliant scholar, workaholic, a person who asked about your family members and bought gifts, attended the Eucharist mass every single day and a teacher who imparted knowledge and knew the Bible by heart.
“He taught us to read the word as often as we could. He could say to us, ‘Someday you will be in prison without a Bible; therefore how will you know your Bible if you do not read it? He did not only preach the Bible, he lived it.”
Friends compared Tutu to the good Samaritan in the Bible. This is based on his selfless character. He helped others during the apartheid regime without fear of being killed. He loved the unloved.
Tutu sacrificed his life for the sake of others.
