De-congesting Nairobi City with two car-free days from February 1
CS Macharia has declared Wednesdays and Saturdays as car-free days in Nairobi City in an attempt to reduce congestion in Nairobi City.
The Central Business District (CBD) will be open for 100,000 hawkers during those two days as open air market. Bicycle riders will be allowed to enter the CBD on those two days.
The plan will start with a pilot project which will accommodate 5,000 small traders with mobile stores where merchandise will be sold.
The CS also indicated that the 64 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses will be arriving in Kenya from South Africa in the next one month.
Kenyans on Twitter reacted as follows:
“Decision BY the @TransportKE to set aside car-free days in Nairobi CBD from Feb 1 requires public participation and its unnecessary given that the move doesn’t amount to decongestion of traffic,” said Consumers Federation of Kenya.
