The overall budgetary allocation for the 2017 General Election is Ksh. 49.98 billion composed of Ksh. 27,319,189,140 (54.7%) in FY 2016/2017 and Ksh. 22,662,477,459 (45.3%) in FY 2017/2018. The allocation in FY 2017/2018 excludes Ksh. 2.5 billion provided in FY 2016/2017 for printing of ballot papers.
Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will take the lion’s share of the Ksh. 50 billion budget. It has been allocated Ksh. 42.9 billion. The exchequer allocated this principal agency Ksh. 23.8 billion in FY 2016/2017 and a further Ksh. 19.1 billion in FY 2017/2018.

Out of the Ksh. 19.1 billion, the commission’s normal operations will consume Ksh. 5.6 billion (31.1%) and the remaining Ksh. 13.17 billion be spent on the material day August 8th, 2017.
State Department for Interior
This Ministry will play a crucial role of providing security for all polling stations across Kenya. The Ministry is currently headed by Dr. Fred Matiang’i on an acting capacity. The ministry will provide security for IEBC personnel and all equipment that will be used for voting.
The State Department for Interior was allocated Ksh. 2.3 billion from FY 2016/2017 and Ksh. 1.5 billion in FY 2017/2018. This adds up to a total of Ksh. 3.8 billion.
The Judiciary will play a crucial role in resolution of disputes arising from the general elections. The Judicial Committee on Elections has been allocated Ksh. 227.3 million to handle election related cases.
Defense and National Intelligence Service
The Ministry of Defense has been allocated Ksh. 1.5 billion to help secure our borders as we exercise our constitutional rights. The Defense forces will largely focus on Mandera, Lamu and Wajir. The National Intelligence Service will also gathering their intelligence to support in security operations at a cost of Ksh. 550 million. These two budgetary allocations have been drawn from fiscal year 2017/2018.
