Sharing is Caring

Rugby Africa has cancelled all its competitions so as to protect the health of players and their loved ones.

The Rugby Africa Cup was to get underway on May 30 but a decision was taken earlier this month to prioritise the health of players above the continental competition.

The Sevens under 20 tournament and the Women’s competition have also been cancelled.

Rugby Africa issued a statement saying the following lead to the cancellation of the games.
Bans on travel, public gatherings and sporting events across Africa

  1. Not all countries will lift restrictions at the same time, so compromising the participation in some countries.
  2. Travel costs are set to increase significantly
  3. Potential quarantine requirements could require some teams to spend much longer periods abroad.

Rugby Africa has also approved the release of $190,000 from solidarity fund to help member federations that are struggling financially due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The financial aid ranges from food packages, meals, protective equipment, and medical support for players and clubs – to support their rugby communities.

“This financial support supplements a range of initiatives already rolled out to boost our rugby community and highlights the shared values and cooperation dear to our organisation,” said Rugby Africa president Khaled Babbou.

“We must also stand together and continue to do everything we can to support those combating the pandemic.”
