The Kidero Impeachment motion wouldn’t be stopped this time round. This started back on 29th September, 2016. The Motion to impeach Kidero was tabled by Mr. Samuel Nyangwara, the Viwandani Member of County Assembly.
The Kenyans on twitter #KOT had their voices heard on this matter. This is what they said about the whole saga:
Billow Kerrow @bkerrow
EACC should take action against Nairobi ODM MCAs for contravening provisions of Chapter Six of the Constitution and investigate Kidero role. This is the Chapter that talks about leadership and integrity.
Some politicians even bet that Kidero will remain governor for the next 10 years.
Boni Khalwale tweeted:
Kidero will be governor for 10 years! take that to Kamirithu Tea Sacco for a loan. #KideroImpeachment
This event was anticipated because before the session commenced police officers were station outside the assembly to deal with any cases of violence.
MCA Nelson Maraga representing Eastleigh South protested when the speaker Alex Magelo ruled that the motion be moved. This lead to a delay of the motion for half an hour. He was finally kicked out of the house.
The impeachment motion was signed by 56 MCAs with the mover being the only CORD Member of County Assembly signing.
Nyagwara is reported to recently having defected to Jubilee. The reasons given for the impeachment include:
- abuse of office
- inability of the governor to control county debt
- irregular awarding of revenue collection tenders
The CORD MCAs were unable to stop the motion. This made them to walk out of the assembly in protest lead by the majority leader Elias Otieno.
Many people see this Kidero impeachment motion as a contest between Jubilee and CORD as well as the governorship race in 2017.
Jubilee has declared in the past that they will make sure they take the seat from CORD. The Deputy President has said a number of times that they want to control the country’s capital city Nairobi.
MCAs Statistics
There are 128 MCAs in Nairobi County. Out of 63 Jubilee MCAs, 55 signed for moving the motion. That means 8 ruling party MCAs abstained from signing the motion.
Kidero is expected to appear before the assembly to convince them that the allegations facing him are just malicious. If he does not appear in person, his lawyers will represent him.
A section of political pundits feel that this is a ploy by MCAs to extort Kidero in an attempt to raise campaign finances for 2017.
