Congo’s opposition candidate Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas dies a day after elections on the plane to France for treatment. 

“Congo’s opposition candidate Kolelas dies a day after elections, in a medical aircraft that was taking him to France for treatment. He died before the vote counting was rigged for long-ruling strongman Denis Sassou Nguesso,” wrote Charles Onyango Obbo on Twitter.

Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas, 60, was the major opposition candidate who faced Denis Sassou Nguesso,77, who has stayed in power since 1979 (36 years). 

Denis Sassou Nguesso was forced to introduce multiparty elections in Congo in 1991. In 1992, he was defeated at the ballot box but cringed to power till 1997 due to the then ongoing civil war. He has won all elections since then.
