Thousands of citizens protested in Myanmar’s biggest city opposing the take over by the army and calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
The army toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s government and imposed an internet blackout in Myanmar.
According to ABC news, protesters chanted “Long live Mother Suu” and “Down with military dictatorship”near Yangon University. Riot police blocked the main entrance to the University and had two cannon trucks parked nearby.
“We support the right of the people of Myanmar to protest in support of the democratically elected government and their right to freely access information,” USA Embassy tweeted.
Myanmar had experienced 5 decades of military rule before Aung San Suu Kyi took over the reigns of leadership.
Myanmar became most democratic during Suu Kyi’s five years as leader from 2015. However, even during her rule the military help powers through use of repressive laws and persecuted the Rohingya Muslims.
The military accused Suu Kyi and her political party, The National League for Democracy for failure to address the army’s complaints that the elections were marred with fraud. Before the 300 legislators elected under the party would be sworn in, the army announced that they are taking over the leadership of the country for one year.
The UN has promised that they are doing everything under their powers to reverse the military coup in Myanmar.
