The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission fraction that opposed presidential results has denied the claims that they wanted to force a run-off.
The commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati made claims earlier this week that the fraction wanted the repeat of the elections. Juliana Cherera, the commission vice chair, led the fraction that protested against presidential resulst.
Chebukati announced William Ruto as the president elect after the 2022 general elections. The fraction of four commissioners were not part of issuing of presidential certificate to the president elect.
Instead, they held a separate meeting at Serena hotel where they claimed that the commission was not transparent at the final phase of tallying. They claimed that the Chebukati never allowed them to verify the results before announcing the winner.
Following the claims made by Chebukati that they wanted a run-off, Cherera has broken his silence.

“Regrettably, the Chairman Mr. Chebukati clothed himself with autocratic powers and declined to avail the results for verification as duly required by law before the said results are announced.
“He argued that there was no Constitutional or legal basis for the Commission’s involvement in supervising and verifying results received at the National Tallying Centre.” Cherera said in a statement.
The four commissioners declined Chebukati’s claims of them wanting to moderate the presidential results that led to declaration of William Ruto as the President elect.
“At no time did the Commission seek to ‘moderate’ election results but rather requested that a proper verification as envisaged by the Constitution be carried out.
“His actions and conduct were unorthodox and turned the Commission into a one-man show circus in an attempt to subvert the Constitution, electoral laws and the will of the people.” The statement continued.
However, Chebukati has maintained claims that all commissioners had access to all tallying and verification process.
Willian Ruto was declared the winner after attaining the minimum 50+1% requirement of the total votes cast.
