Burundi’s election commission has announced Evariste Ndayishimiye of CNDD-FDD party as the winner of last week’s presidential election, the Daily nation reports.
Evariste Ndayishimiye won the election with 68.7% beating opposition rival Agathon Rwasa who garnered 24.9%.
Burundi went to the ballot on May 20. The election fielded 7 presidential candidates.
The polls marked the end of Mr Pierre Nkurunziza’s 15-year-long rule. He accepted to step down after his attempts to seek another term led to riots in the country.
The elections took place despite the global coronavirus pandemic.
