Burundi’s constitutional court on Thursday upheld the results of last month’s Presidential election and rejected complaints filed by opposition leader Agathon Rwasa, who alleged widespread irregularities.

The CNDD-FDD party candidate Evariste Ndayishimiye won the election with 68% of the votes cast while Agathon Rwasa of CNL party garnered 24%.

The constitutional court ruled the May 20 election was regular and Mr Ndayishimiye is the president-elect.

It termed Rwasa’s complaints as unfounded and said any irregularities could not taint the entire electoral process.

Burundi’s council of Catholic bishops had raised doubts about the election results after election observers witnessed instances of multiple voting, ballots being cast in names of dead people and refugees, voters being forced to vote certain candidates and unauthorised people voting.

CNL party had complained about intimidation ahead of the vote and said that more than 200 of their supporters were arrested on Election Day.

Mr Ndayishimiye, 52, is set to be sworn in on August 20. He will replace Pierre Nkurunziza who has ruled for the last 15 years.
