Burundi and South Sudan could lose their East African Community (EAC) membership, which could undermine the stability of the regional economic bloc, the BBC reports.
The two countries have defaulted on their membership fees and the East African Community assembly has voted to expel the two countries.
A final decision on whether the two will be shown the exit door will be made when heads of state of member nations meet.
Members of East African Community, which includes Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda are supposed to par £6.5M a year.
South Sudan owes $10 million and Burundi has paid nothing in the last four years.
Burundi demands for the fee to be reduced arguing that its economy is smaller than its neighbors.
South Sudan’s government is also struggling to cope with the economic crisis caused by the recent civil war.
