A bride-to-be, Megan Haylett, came across her love rival in Winlaton Gateshed on Jan 24 last year and smashed a glass into her face allegedly for sleeping with her future husband. Since Megan was intoxicated she caused a lot of damage on her love rival.
Megan later said that she only intended to “swill” the 22-year-old with a drink but because she was drunk she hit the victim’s face. Pieces of glass had to be removed from the forehead of the victim and the incident left her with a black eye and a scar.
According to Newcastle Crown Court, the victim was a student who had been who had been seduced by the groom Jordan Stagg. The man confessed on text saying that he loved her so much and had a bad relationship with his now wife Megan.
The court was told that the victim and Jordan “spent the night together” following some “flattering comments” and later her blocked her on phone. The prosecutor revealed that later the victim discovered that Jordan’s relationship was not as early portrayed.
She discovered that the Jordan and Megan were actually planning for a wedding which made her feel guilty. Before the unfortunate incident happened the victim discovered that Megan Haylett was standing next to her at the bar.
The prosecutor said: “She described the defendant began flicking her hair into the face of the complainant, in an attempt to provoke a reaction.
“The complainant described the defendant being ‘mortal drunk’.
“She saw the defendant throw her arm toward her and was aware she was holding a glass in her hand.
“The defendant swilled her with the contents of the glass and the glass also struck her.
“She became aware of pain in her left eye and blood running down her face, the glass clearly having cut her forehead.
“She felt a second blow to the back of her head and saw the defendant being led away by others.”
The victim was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Gateshead for medical attention.
Prosecutors accept Megan Haylett’s intention was to “swill her with a drink” and not to cause injury.
The judge sentenced her to 14 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with a provision for rehabilitation and an order to pay an equivalent of KES 746,000 compensation to the victim.
The judge said told Haylett: “I accept your intention was to swill her, not cut or injure her.”
