Botswana’s capital Gaborone has been placed on total lockdown after a rise in the number of coronavirus infections.
Health officials announced the city will be on lockdown from Friday midnight until further notice after an earlier announcement of 12 new infections.
A total of 60 coronavirus cases have now been confirmed in Botswana since the first case was reported in March.
Only those who provide essential services will be allowed to return to work and movement permits will be required for those who have to travel to the city.
4 were imported cases at the border posts while 8 were local transmissions according to Botswana’s Director of Public Health Malaki Tshipayagae.
The health authorities are now contact tracing and testing the people who visited the affected areas.
Botswana introduced lockdown measures in April and started easing the measures at the end of May.
The country has reported only imported cases in recent weeks, mostly from truck drivers.
