Plans are underway to introduce Swahili language in Botswana’s local schools, a senior official said on Tuesday.
Botswana’s minister for Basic Education Fidelis Molao said the language will be introduce in the future at a language workshop in Francistown, East of Botswana.
Swahili language is widely spoken in Eastern and South Eastern parts of Africa.
Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, DR Congo and Malawi speak Swahili.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will be one of the major trading partners with many Swahili-speaking countries in the near future, which Botswana needs most as it is vying for an export-led economy, Molao said.
At the moment, English, French and Portuguese are the languages used by the SADC.
On Wednesday, the Ethiopian embassy in Beijing announced the Beijing Foreign Studies University is offering a degree programme in Ethiopia’s Amharic language.
