Currently Boment County is led by Her Excellence the Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso. She is the second governor of Bomet County. Before getting into politics, she was a lecturer at Egerton University’s Department of Language and Linguistics.

Dr. Joyce Laboso is deputized by Dr. Hillary Barchok as her deputy governor. He is a curriculum development specialist and a former dean School of Education at Chuka University. 

Resource requirements 

In order to implement the Bomet County Integrated development plan 2018-2022, a total of Ksh. 51.4 billion is required. These resources will be mobilized from equitable share, own source of revenue, conditional grants and funds from development partners. Bomet County Integrated development plan 2018-2022 approximates that they will be able to raise Ksh. 45.9 billion. This leaves Bomet County with a resource gap of Ksh. 5.5 billion. 

General Information

Bomet County is predominantly occupied by the Kipsigis sub-tribe of the Kalenjin tribe.

Bomet County is a member of the Lake Region Economic Bloc.

Area: 2,037.4 square kilometers.

Bomet County is the source of major rivers such as Mara and Itare which flow into Lake Victoria.

Population

The population of Bomet County was estimated at 723,813 (50.3% women and 49.7% men) in the 2009 Population and Housing Census and has similar features as that of the national population but different demographic indicators. The population was estimated to be 922,888 in 2018 and is projected to reach 974,089 and 1,028,130 in 2020 and 2022 respectively growing at an estimated population growth rate of 2.7 per cent with the same distribution for women and men. 

Administrative and Political Units

Bomet County is made up of 5 sub-counties, 25 wards, 66 locations, 177 sub locations and 1,977 villages.  Sub-counties: Bomet Central, Bomet East, Chepalungu, Sotik and Konoin.

According to Bomet County Integrated development plan 2018 -2022 Chepalungu Sub-County is the largest in area covering 535.8 square kilometers.

Bomet town has the highest population of 7,035 while Sotik has an estimated population of 5,220 people according to the 2009 census.

The population of the two towns is projected to increase to 9,993 and 7,415 by 2022 respectively. Proper planning of these urban centres is necessary to provide adequate amenities to the increasing population.

It should however, be noted that according to the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011 none of the two centres qualifies to be a town.

Review of Implementation of the Previous CIDP

Achievements – according to Bomet County Integrated development plan 2018 -2022: 

  • The county has also constructed three sub-county offices in Konoin, Sotik and Chepalungu with Konoin subcounty office having been completed and in use.
  • A total of 84 motor vehicles and five (5) motorbikes were purchased for various departments including the sub-counties and wards.
  • County Enterprise Fund was established to support cooperatives and a total of Ksh 41M was disbursed to 30 cooperatives.
  • An abattoir was build at Kapsimatwo and several others at Mulot, Kapkoros, Mogogosiek and Kapkilaibei were renovated.
  • Constructed 15 public toilets in urban centres of Bomet, Silibwet and Kaplong. Out of these five have been completed and operationalized while construction of the remaining 10 is ongoing. The use of the completed public toilets has improved sanitation in the county
  • Acquired 43 parcels of land for various development projects within the county.
  • Acquired three (3) fire engines.
  • Longisa Referral Hospital and other health facilities were upgraded. ii. Procurement of new medical equipment such as x-rays machines, beds, theatre and laboratory equipment. iii. Secured medical equipment from well wishers and development partners
  • Lease of six ambulances to support referral cases. vi. Improved administration of health facilities and programmes vii. Improved public health promotions and preventive programmes

County Development Priorities and Strategies for 2018-2022

Flagship Projects

  • Milk processing plant at Chebole Ksh. 250 million;
  • Banana processing plant at Kembu-Kaparuso at a cost of Ksh. 80M;
  • Local poultry processing plant at Kipsonoi at a cost of Ksh. 40 million;

Water and Sanitation (WASH)

  • Water supply infrastructure Ksh. 2 billion;
  • Spend Ksh. 750 million to put 1,320 ha under irrigation
  • Construct irrigation facilities at a cost of Ksh. 900 million
  • Construct Bosto water project at South West Mau Forest at a cost 23 billion;
  • Bomet-Mulot Water Project at Bomet Central at a cost of Ksh. 1.7 billion;
  • Rehabilitation of Chepalungu forest by increasing tree cover at a cost of Ksh. 2.5 billion;
  • Tarmac 100 km of roads at a cost of Ksh. 5.5 billion;
  • 500 million for motorized bridges;
  • 200 m for construction of foot bridges;
  • To spend Ksh. 50 million to construct a filing station in order to achieve uninterrupted supply of fuel at reduced cost;
  • 50 million for construction of boda boda sheds;
  • Tourism circuit developed connecting Narok, Bomet , Kericho , Nyamira and Nakuru Counties Ksh. 100 million.
