Biography of the late Professor H.W. Okoth-Ogendo
Professor Hastings Okoth-Ogendo was a Kenyan law professor who was born on 1 July 1944. He was educated at the University of East Africa where he was award a Bachelors of Law (LLB) in 1970. Later he proceeded to Oxford (1972) and then Yale in 1978 where he earned his doctorate in Jurisprudence (JSD).
From 1970, Okoth-Ogendo taught and researched at University of Nairobi’s School of Law. He served in various positions as a Dean, departmental chair, member of University Council, Senate and College Academic Board.
He served as a visiting professor at various universities around the globe including: Harvard, University of Dar es salaam, Zambia, Zimbabwe, The Soborne in Paris, Oxford, Yale, Boston, New York, Iowa City, Wisconsin and Clark among others.
During his life as an academic H.W. Okoth-Ogendo published widely on various topics such as law of property on land, African Constitutional history, natural resources law, human rights, agrarian policy and legislation and environmental governance among others.

Professor Hastings Okoth-Ogendo worked as a consultant for United Nations (UN) Habitat, UNFAO, United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), UNDP, World Bank Group, The African Union, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), DFID, SIDA, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and for governments such as South Africa, Southern Sudan, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Lesotho as well as Guyana in South America.
Professor Hastings Okoth-Ogendo served on numerous national as well as international task forces, commissions and missions. Under these roles he engaged on a variety of issues such as land policy development, education, reproductive health, constitution-making and population management.

In the academic world, ProfessorHastings Okoth-Ogendo served as an assistant lecturer (1970-1984), associate professor (1984-1988), Visiting Professor of Law at New York University (Spring 1997 and Spring, 2000) and finally he was appointed Professor of Law at University of Nairobi’s Public Law from 1988 until his demise.
