Filippo Inzaghi’s Benevento Calcio earned a promotion to the Serie A on Monday with 7 league games left to play.
Benevento Calcio beat Juve Stabia 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Cagliari forward Marco Sau.
The result sealed the Serie B title.
Benevento Calcio have won 23 out of 31 league games and have a 24-point advantage over Crotone and Cittadella.
Ascoli were the last team to be promoted to the Serie A with 7 games remaining. They did so in 1977-78 season when only two points were awarded for a win.
Benevento Calcio were promoted to the Serie A three years ago but they were relegated after one season.
Former AC Milan and Bologna head coach Filippo Inzaghi took over Benevento a year ago. He’ll rejoin his brother Simone Inzaghi in the Serie A next season.
Simone Inzaghi is in charge of Lazio.
Benevento Calcio are already preparing for life in Italy’s top flight. Former Marseille and Chelsea striker Loic Remy is reported to have arrived for a medical ahead of signing.
