Ronald Koeman has been appointed the new Barcelona head coach on a two-year contract.
The Dutchman leaves his role as head coach of Netherlands to succeed Quique Setien, who was fired after Barcelona lost 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Koeman had been working as head coach of Netherlands since 2018, having taken charge following Dick Advocaat’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Koeman, who was a Barcelona player between 1989 to 1995, led Netherlands to Nations League final last year and won six out of eight Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Koeman turned down Barcelona’s advances after they fired Ernesto Valverde in January, saying he wanted to guide the Netherlands into the Euro 2020.
However, the Euro 2020 was pushed to 2021 due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettinho had been mentioned as a possible option but reports indicate that the Barcelona board refused to sanction his appointment due to his connections with local rivals Espanyol.
The 2020-21 La Liga season will start on 12 September 2020.
