In 1991 Aung San Suu Kyi won a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to bring democracy to Myanmar. She was an icon of human rights. She was an activist who challenged the ruthless army generals who ruled Mynma for many years. 

Aung San Suu Kyi is accused of targeting and killing the Rohingya Muslim minority. She is a fallen international icon of peace. However, she still remains popular with Myanmar’s Buddhist majority. 

Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Myanmar’s independence hero, General Aung San.

Aung San Suu Kyi lived in India in 1960 with her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, who had been appointed the ambassador to New Delhi. 

Four years later Aung San Suu Kyi attended Oxford University in the United Kingdom. She studied economics, philosophy and politics. 

After her university, Aung San Suu Kyi worked in Bhutan and Japan before settling in the UK to raise her two children. 

In 1998, Aung San Suu Kyi traveled back to Yangon to take care of her sick mother and found a lot of political upheavals. As  a true daughter of the founding father of Myanmar, she would not stay indifferent. She lead the protest against the then dictator General Ne Win. 

Aung San Suu Kyi organized rallies and traveled around the country calling for democratic reforms. The military repressed the demonstrations and put Suu Kyi under house arrest. 

Under he watch as PM, the military has been killing or raping the Rohingya Muslim minority group.
