New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority is asking the national airline to weigh passengers before departing on international flights.
This will happen at the Auckland International Airport up to July, 2, 2023.
This is happening under the passenger weight survey to collect data on the distribution of weight on planes.
For many people weight is a personal issue and many would not wish to share such data. However, the passengers were assured that the data is anonymous.
The data info is not viewable on the agent’s screen. It will be submitted directly to the survey.
The luggage will also be weighed on a separate scale.
This is not the first time that Air New Zealand is collected data on passenger weight.
Passengers traveling on the Auckland to New York route are the ones most likely to be weighed.
The 17-hour route was launched last fall as a key strategy for the Air New Zealand post the pandemic. This is one of the longest routes in the world.
The New Zealand – New York route (17 hours) is longer than Nairobi – New York direct route (15 hours). That is a whopping two hours longer.
