The Egyptian FA has found out that several trophies are missing from its headquarters in Cairo. Among those missing is the original African Cup of Nations.
The Egyptian FA has already launched investigations into the matter.
“As the Egyptian FA is currently developing the main headquarters, including changing the entrance to a small museum of Egyptian football, the management was shocked by the disappearance of some old trophies from the storeroom,” said the Egypt FA in a statement.
“The EFA is now investigating the trophies’ disappearance to determine if those old trophies were saved after the building was burned … or if they were lost when the building was exposed during this incident,” the EFA added.
Egyptian won the trophy thrice between 2006 and 2010 thus had the opportunity to keep trophy permanently. The other African teams that have won the trophy thrice are Ghana and Cameroon.
CAF rules state that a country that wins the African Cup of Nations trophy thrice will own it for good.
The current Africa Cup of Nations trophy is with Algeria, who won it in Cairo last year.
