An employee at Walgreens refused to sell condoms to a couple citing religious reasons. Now members of the public are calling for a boycott of Walgreens.
A couple went shopping at Walgreens in Wisconsin and revealed that an employee refused to sell them condoms citing religious reasons. Walgreens said that they allow that under the company’s policies.
Jess, partner to Nathan Pentz, went to the store to buy condoms because she forgot her birth control.
At the checkout, the cashier refused to sale the condoms because of his faith. She said that the employee “embarrassed her in front of other customers because of her reproductive choices.”
“Our policies are designed to ensure we meet the needs of our patients and customers while respecting the religious and moral beliefs of our team members,” the stores’ spokesperson stated.
“The instances are rare, however when a team member has a moral or religious conviction about completing a transaction, they are required to refer the customer to another employee or manager on duty who will complete the transaction, which is what occurred in this instance.”
These cases have been reported in the past. For instance, a US Supreme Court case in 2018 of a bakery that refused to bake a cake for a gay couple. Elsewhere in Colorado, a web design company refused to provide their services for same-sex marriages. The case will be heard in October 2022.
