During my work related travels along the coast of Kenya, I have noted that there is a preferred housing architecture by the natives of this land. These houses are usually called Swahili houses. I’ll share several photos on this blog article to highlight common features in the said housing architecture.
Photo: Swahili housing whose main feature is a roof thatched with Makuti. This is a common scene in the rural coastal counties. I also noted that the Swahili and Mijikenda do not like fencing their compounds (perimeter fences). You can approach their houses from numerous directions. ‘Gated community’ is detested in the coast of Kenya- mostly in villages.
