The former chairman of SM investments corporation and family have a diversified source of wealth. Henry Sy was Philippines’ richest person for 11 consecutive years. When he died in 2018 he had a net worth of $19 billion.

 

Henry Sy  chairman of SM investments corporation was a Filipino businessman and investor. He died in his sleep on 19 January, 2019. He was the founder of SM Investments which owns 49 SM malls, 62 departmental stores, 56 supermarkets and an excess of 200 grocery stores. He started with ShoeMart which was a small shoes store in Philippines.

In 1972, he launched SM Quiapo as his first departmental store. In 1985, he opened SM Supermalls which is a group of shopping malls. Now they are 96 in number out of which 88 malls were in Philippines and 8 in China.  In 1990s he opened more shopping malls. In 1994 he registered SM Prime Holdings.

 

In order to help the elderly, youth and disabled Henry Sy established SM Foundation. The billionaire was conferred with an honorary doctorate by De La Salle University.

 

Henry Sy was married to Felicidad Tan a shoelace vendor at the time.
