Ecuador mayor survives assassination attempt. Francisco Tamariz, Mayor of La Libertad town was nearly killed by an assassin on Saturday August 19. This happened on the eve of general elections.

 

The mayor addressed his supporters on social media where he stated that he escaped the snare of assassins who had fired at his car with 30 shots.

 

“They tried to kill me,” he said and added that an excess of eight people had witnessed the shooting.

 

There has been a rise in violence in Ecuador in the recent years. Now the country is a key drug trafficking hub. Local gangs who are affiliated with the drug cartels are fighting to control the nation’s streets, drug routes and prisons. This has led to death or injury of many people across the country.

 

Luisa Gonzalez is the front runner in the recent presidential elections in Ecuador. He described the rising violence as the nation’s ‘bloodiest era’.

 

In the recent past, another political leader by the name Pedro Briones was assassinated.

 

The late political leader was an organizer of Citizen Revolution. This is a political party which was founded by former president Rafael Correa. His death was confirmed by Gonzalez on X.

 

Presidential candidate Fernando Villavincio who was a critic of corruption and organized crime was also assassinated a week earlier.
