Sharing is Caring

Member of Parliament for Kamkunji, Yusuf Hassan, has shared his experiences hosting Mwai Kibaki in Johannesburg.

He shared this on a Twitter thread as follows:

In 1997 Kibaki was on a visit to Johannesburg at the invitation of the ANC. After hosting him for dinner, I took him on a tour of the city. When we passed the famous Market Theatre area, we saw a sign that the legendary musician Hugh Masekela was performing there that evening.

Kibaki lightened up & said that Masekela was one of his favourite singers. As a jazz lover, I was excited &went to buy tickets but the show was sold out . As I was returning to the parking, I bumped into Masekela whom I knew from our exile days who arranged for us to get in.

Masekela announced the presence of Kibaki and his Kenyan delegation which included the late Kijana Wamalwa, Mukisa Kituyi, Joseph Munyao and Feroze Nowrojee among others. They thoroughly enjoyed the show and stayed late into the night.

Little did I know then that I will return home to become an MP thru his PNU party in Kamukunji, which in 2011 was an extension of his old constituency of Bahati. He was truly a transformative leader & a great statesman. A man of few words but lots of actions. Fare thee well

Many Twitter users asked Hassan to write a Memoir to document his experiences from his time as journalist and his exile experiences.

“Honorable Yusuf (You are indeed an honorable man I don’t use this term loosely) please find time and write a book. Your memoirs would be captivating. Eid Mubarak,” Chris wrote on Twitter.
